This chapter is an interesting exploration of despair- it’s not for nothing that it’s called the sin against the Holy Spirit - the abandonment of hope. Denethor is a much more nuanced and interesting character in the book than in the film, where he is portrayed as a gibbering coward. Here he still has a tragic nobility
